About the Artist
Mike in his own words:
I left school at age 15 and went straight into working with animals, spending 2 years at Dudley Zoo as a keeper of birds.
I went on to be in charge of the large waterfowl collection there before joining the then Wildfowl Trust at Slimbridge, eventually moving to the Wildfowl Trust Peakirk to work in the collection and help run Borough Fen decoy with Tony Cook.
After photographing and filming wildlife as an enthusiastic amateur for several years, an early break came with the RSPB Film Unit. This led on to a 35 year career as a wildlife cameraman, working mainly for the BBC Natural History Unit on series such as 'The Life of Birds', 'Planet Earth' and many programmes in the Natural World series, my favourite being 'Attenborough in Paradise', filming Birds of Paradise in New Guinea with Sir David.
Although I am now retired from filming for TV I still have a passion for photography and especially for wildfowl. Those early seeds of passion for the Anatidae, sown over 60 years ago. I have had numerous exhibitions of my work both at Slimbridge and at Welney and I have been exhibiting at the Bird Fair in Rutland for many years. I have written articles on wildfowl for the WWT magazine and recently published a book on my 'wild' life entitled 'Untangling the Knot, Belugas and Bears'.
