Bewick's arrival

The first Bewick's swans have arrived on the Ouse Washes today.  A small flock of seven birds were seen flying over the reserve this morning.  These birds have made an epic journey from Arctic Russia to over winter at wetland sites like ours at WWT Welney.  We also now have at least 500 whooper swans on site, which have also made an incredible journey but from the opposite direction, they have arrived from Iceland.  We look forward to the numbers of wintering birds growing each day from now on.

Pochard numbers are also increasing which should make our first winter wild swans feeds at the end of this week really interesting to watch.
