Close Encounters revamp underway
An exciting revamp of our Close Encounters exhibit is underway!
Our duck hand-feeding area is now temporarily closed to visitors as it undergoes a long-awaited facelift.
As well as draining and desilting the pond, our team will be adding some brilliant new features including a bridge and sensory planting to enhance the visitor experience and an island dedicated to the eider duck – or Cuddy’s duck – to help tell the story of this charismatic species and its historical connections to the North East.
The endangered duck species which usually live in Close Encounters have been moved to different exhibits for now (with their interp signs in tow to avoid ID confusion!) and Ganderland continues to provide nose-to-beak bird feeding with stars such as our red-breasted and Hawaiian geese.
We will be unveiling the new exhibit early this summer and can’t wait for you all to start enjoying it!
