Recent Sightings (13th-16th Jan)

British Steel Hide

The 2 Spoonbill have still been using the saline lagoons, as well as counts of 207 Wigeon, 3 Pochard, 35 Tufted Duck. Wader numbers include 78 Dunlin, 3 Greenshank, 8 Redshank and Spotted Redshank, as well as 78 Lapwing, a Reed Bunting and 6 Shoveler. More birds include 92 Black Headed Gull, 12 Great Black Backed Gulls. Out on the estuary there have been 183 Pintail counted and 116 Brent Geese.

Millenium Wetlands

In the north a Woodcock was seen on the 15th. The same day a Hawfinch was in the area. A count around the reserve also saw 2 Song Thrush, 5 Water Rail, a Jay, 2 Greater Spotted Woodpecker, 1 Raven, 54 Gadwall and 12 Cormorants. Other water birds include 11 Tufted Duck, 5 Pochard, 1 Snipe, 3 Little Grebes, 4 Little Egret, 3 Grey Heron and 28 Teal. Also seen was a Buzzard, 2 Greenfinch, 2 Coal tit, a Redwing and a Chiffchaff.

Other Wildlife

A stoat was seen scurrying across the reserve on 15th and 3 sightings of otter have been reported since Saturday. They seem to have been fairly active recently in this cold weather so keep your eyes peeled!
